How to Track Pay Per Click Search Keywords and Bid Keywords using Google Analytics

Track Pay Per Click Search KeywordAdwords Analysis report in Google Analytics by default displays the keyword term that you have used in our adwords campaign. When we are using Broad Match or Phrase Match keywords in our adwords campaign we will not be able to find out the exact keyword what our visitors have searched for to see our ads. Finding out the exact search keywords will help us to optimize our Google adwords campaign and achieve high ROI.

How to Track Pay Per Click Search Keywords and Bid Keywords using Google Analytics ?

Just using three filters in Google Analytics report will help us to find the exact keywords used by our visitors in Google Adwords Campaign.

Many of my posts based on Google Analytics will help you to find where to create the filter. Now let us create the filters.

Filter 1.
Filter Name: Google Adwords - Extract keywords 1
Filter type: Custom filter – Advanced (Select the button)
Field A -> Extract A: Referral, (\?|&)(q|p)=([^&]*)
Field B -> Extract B: Campaign Medium, cpc|ppc
Output To -> Constructor: Custom Field 1: $A3
Field A Required: Yes (Select the button)
Field B Required: Yes (Select the button)
Override Output Field: Yes (Select the button)
Case Sensitive: No (Select the button)

Explanation: For every visit whose Referral has the pattern ‘(\?|&)(q|p)=([^&*])’, and who visited through Campaign Medium of cpc or ppc - copy the third matching element from Referral to a variable called $A3 and copy $A3 contents to Custom Field 1.

Filter 2.
Filter Name: Google Adwords - Extract keywords 2
Filter type: Custom filter – Advanced (Select the button)
Field A -> Extract A: Custom Field 1, (.*)
Field B -> Extract B: Campaign Term, (.*)
Output To -> Constructor: Campaign Term: $B1.($A1)
Field A Required: Yes (Select the button)
Field B Required: Yes (Select the button)
Override Output Field: Yes (Select the button)
Case Sensitive: No (Select the button)

Explanation: All contents of the search keywords copied in Filter 1 (held in Custom
Field 1) are combined with all contents of the Campaign Term (Pay per click Bid keyword), and the result is copied to the Campaign Term, overwriting its original value. With this method, both the Pay per click bid keyword and the search keywords are visible
